Pencils for Africa is a popular student-led service organization that is designed to raise the consciousness of African issues among young people. It connects our students with African students and citizens to create a new and holistic understanding of African issues that may ultimately lead to better decisions regarding policy, business, and education. In fact, PFA is so successful that it has served as a catalyst for forming new stategic partnerships that work to create new or reinvigorate current charities that are devoted to improving lives of every day Africans. The work of Saint Hilary students and their faculty leader, Chyah Weitzman, have been featured several times in the local press, and many of our students continue to provide leadership well into their high school years. Get Some, Give Some is a student-founded organization that works to raise money and connect resources for international and local causes. For example, they provide tutoring to the children in the Canal district of San Rafael. They also sing in nursing homes, host soup suppers, and serve dinner to and collect peronal hygiene items for the homeless in Marin County. You will also see their helping hands during the monthly Parish Senior Luncheon and making cards/prayer baskets for those in need.
The Student Council is an opportunity afforded to students to learn the skills of leadership during elementary school. Leadership skills help students in several ways and are essential for them to collaborate with their peers during their current and future academic years and in their practical life as well. A few key advantages of promoting leadership through a Student Council for students are:
Ten elected officers from the upper grades lead all-school assemblies, plan Spirit Days and dances, and lead the student body in many fundraising and community building activities. Students are elected at the end of the year for council the following year. They attend a summer leadership workshop in preparation for their term.
